Originally, Tommy Hilfiger clothing was designed for young American university students, but in the mid-90s the rapper Snoop Dogg started to wear them giving them a new credibility. Young black-Americans followed the trend and Tommy Hilfiger designs became deliberately more street and baggy. In 1985 he launches his own brand. Following his first publicity campaign, costing 2million dollars (2.24 million Euros), he was ranked among the four great American designers, placing him alongside Perry Ellis, Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren. In 1990, Tommy Hilfiger was awarded the Menswear Designer of the Year prize by the Council of Fashion Designers in America.
